Postcard

And after the fun of the first here is another :)

This week in the studio we have been working on an organic identity which evokes movement and reflects on the importance of the elements. This is for a small jewelery company based on an island off South Australia. Moodboard and outcomes to follow so stay tuned.

DPM Soldiers Without Guns!-Meg

One of our latest projects here at DPM is targeting our colleagues working in government. Our message is that we work well with government and as a visual connection we’ve incorporated the message and style of WW2 propaganda posters. We are the “land army,” the “home front,” and the workers in the factories providing the ammunition!

Research for our mail outs has lead me down an interesting path of discovery of women in propaganda. The messages seemed to boil down to three distinct topics… Don’t talk to women, they will spill your war plans; Women will make you sick, avoid them while over seas; and a third inspiring women to hold the home front together.

Regardless of whether the messages were a touch misogynistic, the art work of WW2 propaganda is no doubt considered an iconic selection of Americana. They have adapted beautifully to delivering our design message with a clever vintage twist. We are really excited to get these out to our clients to show that we’re willing to do our patriotic duty to support a strong nation with strong design!

Finding a Niche- Meg

Hello DPM followers! I am the newest edition to the DPM creative team. Not only an I a newbie on the team but I am also fresh off the boat (plane…my stomach couldn’t handle a sea voyage) as a new resident of Australia.

Being new usually means you’ve got a major task ahead of you to find people with the same aspirations and values. It can be especially difficult as a designer to find the right environment to nurture your creativity and to match your level of quality and customer service. I was fortunate enough to find DPM straight away in my search for quality printers in Sydney. Printer’s are a dime a dozen but I’ve worked specifically in print production for many years and can recognize a printer from a print production team that takes pride in cost effective print management and quality control.

I’m also excited to be a part of the DPM’s next big step in letting you all know what our quality Print Production experience can do for you! Yes, not only are we a creative bunch of designers but we can also see your project through to a beautiful piece of art you can touch, hold and love. What cannot be achieved by most designers, or even by taking your work to a printer, is a seamless work flow from conception to finishing. Because we control your work every step of the way we save you money, we monitor the quality of production, and our turn around time is superb.

It is such good fortune to have found a creative team like DPM because I have always felt this is how design and print should work… hand holding your baby from beginning to end. So keep an eye out for our work in progress, the DPM Print and Production web site that will help to inform you of all the cool stuff we can do with print.

Sneaky Peak

You might have noticed a few new illustrations popping up in places like on our official DPM blog and our brand spanker sign out the front of the studio. Prepare to see plenty more where that came from, because we currently have a new series of postcards* in production that will be filling up letterboxes around the area very soon! The photo above is a sneak peak at some bookmarks from the series featuring the Bearded Hippie Man, the Artsy Care-Free Sewing girl and the cool as Afro man (with possibly the greatest chin going round).

It has created a buzz here in the studio with us all getting crafty and hands on, with a sewing machine, badge press, puzzle pieces and even some beads and buttons getting involved. It’s always fun to put crazy amounts of love and be heavily involved with projects that you know the targeted audience will genuinely enjoy and hopefully have just as much fun. *some of these you will have to pull apart and piece together, others have little treats to take off and wear and some will just be fun to touch and pretty to look at :)

TYPESTACHES

Sometimes I wish that I was a cute old Lady* so no one would question why I want to eat cakes and dessert items for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
But There has never been a time that I wished I could grow a mustache – UNTIL NOW!

This would be the typographic type of stash which would require some expertise in trimming and the upkeep of the thing just to make it look MR. DIN everyday, which I am more than happy to do. I can’t actually grow a stash so I might just look at this amazing poster instead.

*I mean really, if a quarter of a sandwich is ‘filling’ at that age then surely you can just eat a damn lemon tart instead because that’s what you really want.

Brand Colour Management – Brooke

Colour is a powerful tool and for many businesses, an asset which must be seriously safeguarded. Tiffany’s were onto this idea almost two centuries ago. Their iconic blue colour was selected shortly after it opened its doors for business, dating all the way back to September 18, 1837!  Today, that robin egg blue is a stronger brand identifier than the Tiffany’s logo.

When a business embraces a colour for a brand, what they are trying to do with that colour is attract attention, have that colour resonate in a consumer memory, and allow that colour to draw on positive associations.

When consumers look at a piece of printed material, the first thing people see is colour. What get’s noticed next are shapes and symbols, followed by numbers, then words. Further research shows that 60% of the time people will decide if they are attracted to a message, based on colour alone.

Colour consistency and recognition are key factors when considering that consumer decisions are made in seconds. If the colour is not right or is not recognised, brands can erode.

It helps when companies invest in styleguides. That way, colours get assessed in various colour modes, rgb, cmyk and spot. It’s often helpful to make the brand colours spot colours to allow for more consistent reproduction and in some cases, reduce costs via fewer printing units. As another safeguard, try to test your corporate colours on a variety of paper stocks as colours can vary between printing devices, paper stocks and coated finishes.

One thing’s for certain, protecting a brand colour like you would any asset, is key to reaping the rewards available through a successful brand colour.

Eco correspondence – Brooke

It’s exciting to me to be involved in design at a time when green issues are being thought about by a growing number of clients. It seems most of us actually do think about the environment throughout our day – whether we think about grabbing our coffee in an eco sustainable reusable coffee cup, or when buying our fruit and vegetables we look for what’s local and what’s in season.

AND especially when we print things. At times print can be wasteful. I met a printer once who bragged that he would pick up any and every kind of free promotional print material that was handed out on the street just to encourage more recycling. But I don’t believe people like that grow on trees. Rather I think people who get involved with print these days have a strategy, the essence of which is to maximise the punch of the campaign through print but minimise the waste. It’s these clients and sustainably conscious printers that I like to deal with each day.

The gang at John Gambell Graphic Design in the US are good eco design ambassadors. In the course of their work they generate small pieces of high quality coloured cover stock, which are often unacceptable to recyclers. The firm designed a large rubber stamp to quickly convert this scrap into colourful postcards, which are used for informal correspondence with clients and suppliers. Not only eco but delightful. I know I’d enjoy receiving a note on one of these cards.

Ampersands are cool.

It has been cool for quite some time –  check this evolution of the ampersand below.

It dates way back to friggen Roman times. I think it is safe to say the little bugger is the hardest thing to learn how to draw back in primary school days. No need to draw it kiddies –  there are awesome typefaces with such beautiful ampersands. They can really stand out and compliment type or images. I find that when you have more to say, using ‘&’ can really help to re-inforce the point. Our new Ad for Art Almanac mag sets off what I am babbling on about here. We design AND & AND & AND  print! See, without the beautiful Ampersand some people would go oh DPM a graphic DESIGN agency cool…. but the little guy there really pushes the fact that we are such a multidisciplinary place we also PRINT!  Too easy. We now have placed two ideas in peoples head with the help of our friend  &.

Plus here is something spesh when they have that extra quirkiness about them, maybe a cursive extension or a really thin and subtle outline or even an awesome letterpressed ampersand. ohh yeh!

There is even a magazine named after it. check
